Toy Story 5 Trailer Pits Woody and Buzz Against a Digital Device

Exactly 30 years after the first Toy Story film was released, establishing the animation giant as a major animation studio and bringing audiences to beloved figures like the cowboy doll (Tom Hanks) and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), who are now household names.

Coming in 2026, the next chapter is set to arrive. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 landed recently, offering a glimpse into the storyline but leaving fans curious how it will address the ending of Toy Story 4.

The Latest Addition: A Digital Device Spooks the Gang

The preview shows the young girl — who inherited the toy collection when he grew up — getting a latest plaything, one that alarms Woody, Buzz, and the crew. She gets her first tablet computer, and she is excited about it.

Theoretically, the amphibian-inspired device will come to life just like the rest of her playthings. However, the characters appear to consider it as a danger intending to supplant them, which it likely will.

The Cowboy's Comeback: Mysteries from Toy Story 4

One thing the trailer doesn't touch on is why the sheriff is returned with his companions in the child's bedroom. The end of Toy Story 4 depicted him set off on a new adventure with Bo Peep (Annie Potts), journeying with a carnival and helping giveaway items find good homes.

Surely, Pixar will explain the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the film. Witnessing him show up in Bonnie's room without warning is a little strange, though. It also raises questions whether Bo Peep will have come back with him. And where is Duke Caboom (the star)?

Continuity from the Last Installment

Fortunately, some elements are carrying over from the prior film. The last thing Woody did before setting off for his new life was pass his symbol of authority to the cowgirl (Joan Cusack), leaving her in charge of Bonnie's bedroom. In the teaser shows the insignia pinned to her shirt.

It is hoped she is remains the driving force among the group.

Toy Story 5 debuts on June 19, 2026.
